Writing Articles for Cash

  • Dec. 4th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
I've been self-employed since 2006, with the exception of a seasonal job I held last year. One thing that I do for money is write. I've written articles and ebooks, both for myself and for others (freelancing or ghostwriting).

I think the easiest way to start out is to write articles for sites that will pay you for content. The money is never much, but it's a good learning experience and you don't have a deadline to worry about. I first started by writing articles for Associated Content. Even though I don't write for them any more I still get about $5 a month from them for the page views my articles get. I've also heard that Helium and Constant Content are good places to go.

If you are interested in writing full time, I'd look at the bidding sites like Elance or Guru. These have a fee to sign up, but if you place lots of bids you can easily make that back. You will probably have to start out charging little for your writing until you get a reputation. You might get some repeat work from sites like that.

Of course, you don't need to stop at articles. Writing ebooks can be more profitable and there is less competition. You can be a freelancer and ghostwrite for someone, or you can write and market the ebook yourself.

I've written more in articles, and on my blog.

Lego Mindstorms NXT

  • Nov. 15th, 2008 at 12:00 PM
I have always loved robots, so I was really excited to discover the Lego Mindstorms NXT. You can build a robot in many different forms, and program it yourself, either directly or by using your computer. I think it's a great way to nurture a love of robotics in children. The Lego Mindstorms NXT is definitely a nifty item.

Pink iPod Nano

  • Nov. 10th, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I think I'll get a pink ipod nano for my niece for a Christmas present. Or maybe myself. The fourth generation looks pretty good. They have both 8 GB and 16GB. I'll probably get the 8GB.

Is it too early for Christmas shopping?

I've been looking at toys on Amazon (yeah, I know, Halloween is tomorrow) and I think my favorite toy this year is Kota My Triceratops. It's a preschool toy that is a robot dinosaur pet from Playskool. A lifesize baby dinosaur. It's cute and I'm sure it's going to be the big toy this year. I know a lot of people are cutting back on spending this Christmas, but are still getting one big toy along with some smaller items.
